Supporting innovation in community-based recycling

At Resource Media we actively promote social and environmental issues, and six years ago set up the Resource Awards to identify, promote and reward the achievements of community-based and not-for-profit recycling projects.
The awards take place at the CRN annual conference, which traditionally attracts the largest audience among the community sector, in addition to government officials, industry and local authority representatives. This year’s conference and awards will be held in London on 4 June and will see the sum of £10,000 given away to winning organizations – £2,500 to each project. Schemes are able to spend their prize money as a stand-alone amount or use it as match funding in order to gain extra funding. Over the years, winning projects have reiterated the long-term value gained from winning a national award – not just in terms of the prize money, but also in boosting credibility among their communities; when working with local authorities, and in the case of those that employ volunteers, in making the volunteers feel they are working for something worthwhile. For these reasons, and with the underlying aim of promoting and encouraging the best of the community sector, we would like to offer the chance to win to the widest possible number of groups.

This year, thanks to the generosity and support of our sponsors, we are offering five categories:

  • Novelis Community Recycling Project of the Year
  • Yell Best Partnership Project
  • Biffa Climate Conscious Award
  • Berryman Kerbside Project of the Year

  • Individual Contribution to the Community Waste Sector (this is a non-financial award.
The winner receives a year’s subscription to Resource magazine and recycled glass award.)

Make a nomination

If you know of a community-based, not-for-profit recycling or waste reduction organisation who you feel should be rewarded - nominate them for the 2008 awards. Nominations close 19 May 2008.

Eligibility

The awards are available to any non-profit community organisation working in the field of waste education, reduction or recycling. Entrants are assessed by a panel of judges, and the awards made on the basis of the innovation, flexibility, diversion from disposal and social benefits of the nominated projects. Nominations will be taken from 21 April. Nominations may be put forward for more than one category.

Judging

The awards are judged by an independent panel of judges and the winners announced at the annual CRN Conference.
